UNDERSTANDING YOUR HOME WI-FI

Better Coverage. Smarter Connections. A Better Wi-Fi Experience.

Learn how your router, connected devices, home layout, and everyday internet activities affect your Wi-Fi performance and what you can do to get the most from your MCG fiber connection.

YOUR WI-FI NETWORK, MADE SIMPLE

Your Wi-Fi network connects your phones, smart TVs, computers, and other wireless devices to your MCG fiber internet service.

Every Wi-Fi network has a network name (SSID) and password. These are what your devices use to connect to your home Wi-Fi.

Where can I find or change my Wi-Fi name and password?

With the MCG Insight App, you can view and manage your Wi-Fi settings right from your phone.

You can also:

  • See which devices are connected to your network.

  • Create a separate Wi-Fi network for guests.

  • Pause internet access for connected devices.

  • Manage your network settings and connected devices.

Helpful Tip: If you use the same Wi-Fi name and password as your previous internet provider, many of your devices may reconnect automatically. Some devices may still need to be connected manually.

WHY ROUTER PLACEMENT MATTERS

Where your router goes can make a big difference in your Wi-Fi experience.

Your router sends wireless signals throughout your home, allowing your devices to connect to the internet. As those signals travel farther or pass through walls and other obstacles, they can become weaker.

That's why your router's location is so important.

Tips for Better Router Placement

  • Keep it central. A location near the center of your home can help distribute Wi-Fi more evenly.

  • Keep it out in the open. Avoid placing your router inside cabinets, behind furniture, or in enclosed spaces.

  • Consider elevation. An elevated location can help reduce obstructions.

  • Avoid interference. Large appliances, metal objects, and some electronics can affect Wi-Fi signals.

  • Think about where you connect. Consider the rooms where you stream, work, play games, or use smart devices most often.

Why is my Wi-Fi stronger in some rooms than others?

Distance, walls, floors, building materials, and interference can all affect signal strength. Even with fast fiber internet, devices farther from your router may experience weaker Wi-Fi.

Remember: Faster internet doesn't automatically mean stronger Wi-Fi coverage. If certain rooms have a weak signal, improving router placement or adding Wi-Fi coverage may be more helpful than upgrading your internet speed.

YOUR DEVICES & YOUR WI-FI EXPERIENCE

It's not just how many devices you have. It's what they're doing.

Today's homes have more connected devices than ever, from phones and televisions to doorbell cameras and smart appliances.
But not every device uses the internet the same way.

STREAMING & ENTERTAINMENT

Watching movies in 4K, streaming live sports, and downloading games can use significant amounts of bandwidth.

WORKING & LEARNING FROM HOME

Video meetings, cloud backups, file transfers, and online learning depend on a reliable connection. Device location and Wi-Fi signal strength also matter.

SMART HOME & EVERYDAY DEVICES

Smart thermostats, plugs, cameras, speakers, and other connected devices have different network demands. Some use very little bandwidth, while others regularly transmit video or data.

Why does my device's type or age matter?

Every device has its own wireless capabilities. Older phones, computers, and smart TVs may not support the same speeds or Wi-Fi technology as newer models.
This means two devices connected to the same MCG Wi-Fi network may perform differently, even when they're in the same room.

Helpful Tip: If one device is experiencing problems but others are working normally, the issue may be related to that particular device rather than your entire internet connection.

UNDERSTANDING WI-FI COVERAGE

Strong Wi-Fi where you need it matters.

Your fiber connection brings high-speed internet into your home, but your Wi-Fi signal needs to reach the places where you use it.

Larger homes, multiple floors, thick walls, and outdoor spaces can make it harder for one router to provide consistent coverage everywhere.

What causes weak Wi-Fi coverage?

Common factors include:

  • Distance from your router.

  • Walls, floors, and building materials.

  • Router placement and physical obstructions.

  • Wireless interference from nearby devices or networks.

  • The wireless capabilities of your connected devices.

What is mesh Wi-Fi?

Mesh Wi-Fi uses additional compatible wireless units that work with your main router to extend coverage into areas where the signal may be weak.
A properly positioned mesh unit can help improve connectivity in distant bedrooms, basements, home offices, or other hard-to-reach areas.

How do I know if I need a mesh unit?

You may benefit from additional Wi-Fi coverage if:

  • Your signal frequently drops in certain rooms.

  • Your devices work well near the router but struggle farther away.

  • You have multiple floors or an unusually spread-out floor plan.

  • You regularly use the internet in areas that receive a weak signal.

Important: Mesh Wi-Fi expands coverage; it does not increase the internet speed delivered to your home.

What about Wi-Fi on my patio, in my garage, or outdoors?

Your Wi-Fi signal may reach outside, but exterior walls, siding, distance, and other obstacles can reduce its strength.

If you regularly stream music outdoors, work on your patio, or use connected devices like outdoor cameras, additional coverage may be worth considering.

Outdoor coverage may require specialized, outdoor-rated Wi-Fi equipment. Contact MCG to discuss the options available for your home.

INTERNET SPEED VS. WI-FI PERFORMANCE

A fast internet connection and a strong Wi-Fi signal are two different things.

Your MCG fiber service determines how much internet bandwidth is available to your home. Your Wi-Fi network determines how effectively that connection reaches your wireless devices.

Both play an important role in your experience.

Why doesn't my phone show my full internet speed?

A speed test performed over Wi-Fi measures the performance of that particular wireless connection.

Results can vary depending on:

  • Your device's capabilities.

  • Your distance from the router.

  • Walls or interference.

  • The Wi-Fi technology being used.

  • Other activity on your network.

  • The speed test server and testing conditions.

Is a wired connection better than Wi-Fi?

For devices that stay in one place, such as a desktop computer or gaming console, a wired Ethernet connection can provide more consistent performance.

Wi-Fi offers the flexibility to move around your home without cables.

Do I need a faster internet package or better Wi-Fi coverage?

It depends on the problem you're experiencing.

Weak signal in certain rooms? You may need better router placement or additional Wi-Fi coverage.

Slow performance across many devices during heavy use? Your household's bandwidth needs may be worth reviewing.

Only one device having problems? Check that device's connection, software, and wireless capabilities first.

MCG can help you determine what may be affecting your experience.

WI-FI TROUBLESHOOTING & ROUTER CARE

Having trouble connecting? Start with a few simple checks.

Having trouble connecting? Start with a few simple checks.

If your internet or Wi-Fi isn't working as expected, try to identify whether the problem is affecting one device or your entire home.

  1. Check your devices. See whether other phones, computers, or TVs can connect.

  2. Check your Wi-Fi connection. Make sure your device is connected to the correct network.

  3. Check your equipment. Look for obvious power or cable issues without disconnecting the fiber connection.

  4. Use your MCG Insight App. Review your network and connected devices using the tools available in the app.

  5. Contact MCG Support. If the issue continues, our team can help troubleshoot your connection.

Should I press the button on my router if my internet stops working?

Don't press or hold the reset button unless MCG Support instructs you to.

Some router buttons can change settings or restore the equipment to its factory defaults. A factory reset may erase your customized Wi-Fi settings and disconnect your devices.

A restart and a factory reset are not the same thing. If you're unsure what a button does, contact MCG before pressing it.
